Love for Lilac at Pier 40

Visitors gathered on the deck and toured the steam engine room of the S.S. Lilac on Friday morning May 21 at a rededication of the former lighthouse tender at its permanent home on Pier 40 at W. Houston St. in the Hudson River Park. Above, on the deck, standing, left to right, are Julie Nadel, executive director of nonprofit Lilac Preservation Project, which owns the vessel; David Reck, Community Board 2 member; Jim Smith, C.B. 2 chairperson; and Norman Brouwer, curator of the Lilac, historian of the South St. Seaport Museum and member of the Preservation Project board. Seated are Florent Morellet, Preservation Project board member, left, and Gerald Weinstein, Preservation Project board president. The water canon salute in the background is by the decommissioned fireboat John J. Harvey.
