‘Little Mish’ to honor Dr. Dave

Eileen Johnson, director of the Little Missionary’s Day Nursery, right, and Marijke Briggs, the nursery school’s treasurer, left, recently visited Dr. David Ores’s funky and fun Clinton St. practice to see the innovative doctor at work. Dr. Dave, as he is known locally, is being honored at this year’s Sara Curry Awards ceremony and benefit dinner at the Angel Orensanz Center on Norfolk St. on Thurs., April 23. Every year the nursery school, at 93 St. Mark’s Place, honors local and international heroes. Dr. Dave has been serving the Lower East Side for over 15 years.  His “zero barrier” approach to medicine means that he bypasses insurance companies and answers his own phone — yes, really. He accepts whatever payment people can afford. He even makes house calls for emergencies. He has begun an innovative Restaurant Health Care Cooperative to provide sustainable healthcare for local restaurant workers. All this makes him a local hero in the eyes of Little Missionary’s Day Nursery and the many patients he has aided.
