Ninth Precinct heroes are honored for a great save and a key catch

The Ninth Precinct Community Council honored the officers and personnel of the East Village’s Ninth Precinct at its annual awards ceremony on Nov. 11. In photo at left, Officers William Svenstrup, left, and Keith Gallagher shared the Officer of the Year Award for saving the life of a toddler after she stopped breathing from a seizure caused by a fever. Described later as “Angels in Blue” by the baby’s mother, the officers had responded to a call on E. 10th St. to assist a mother and her unconscious baby. With no time to spare, Gallagher, a trained E.M.T., was able to resuscitate the baby in the backseat of the squad car as his partner Svenstrup managed to drive with a frantic mother in the front seat and arrive at Bellevue Hospital in just under six minutes. In photo at right, Detective Jeffrey Ford was awarded for his work in helping capture James Gonzalez, who fatally stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Tina Negron, at the Avenue A Key Food supermarket, where they both worked, in February. Gonzalez fled to Florida, where he was captured after being identified by a TV viewer of a segment of “America’s Most Wanted”
