School would be Flatiron’s 1st

A hearing on a new 560-seat public elementary school in School District 2 will be held on Tues., Oct. 28, at the First Alliance Church, 127 W. 26th St., second floor, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The hearing will review the School Construction Authority’s site plan, located on the southeast corner of Sixth Ave. and 17th St., currently occupied by the New York Foundling Hospital.

The site is in Community Board 5, which runs up the middle of Manhattan between Union Square and Central Park South. There are currently no public elementary or middle schools in C.B. 5, even though residential use is dramatically increasing.

According to Borough President Scott Stringer’s “Still Crowded Out” report, “[The Community Board 5] area is a traditionally commercial part of the city that has recently seen an explosion of new residential buildings, particularly in the Flatiron neighborhood and surrounding Union and Madison squares.”

The proposed school site currently contains a 14-story hospital. Under the proposed project, the S.C.A. would acquire a condominium interest in and convert the cellar and lower six floors into a school.
