Pitching in for Union Square Park

Serving meals in soup kitchens, mentoring homeless children and beautifying area parks were among the types of community service volunteered by 30 Washington Irving High School students this summer under the Union Square Partnership’s Summer of Service program. They also participated in educational workshops, debates and field trips. “Summer of Service is designed to keep youth engaged during summer months and provide them with a safe, supportive environment to build self-confidence, character and community involvement,” said Jennifer Falk, the partnership’s executive director. “These young men and women truly made a difference in the lives of every person they interacted with this summer.” The students gave a total of more than 330 hours of volunteer effort.
