Javits expansion approval expected

The state Public Authorities Control Board is expected to approve the proposed expansion of the Javits Convention Center at the board’s Wed. July 26 meeting. The expansion planned by the Empire State Development Corporation would make the Javits Center competitive with larger convention centers across the country by increasing its area from 790,000 square feet to 1.3 million square feet, by adding an extension to its northern side.

The project was included last year as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment plan. The P.A.C.B., composed of representatives of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Governor Pataki, is expected to approve the expansion, which could result in an annual tax revenue increase of $53 million from increased convention business.
