The first swimmer arriving at North Cove on May 28
Take me to the river
On May 28, 200 swimmers, ages 16 to 71, hopped in the Hudson River by the Staten Island Ferry Terminal for an early-morning, 1.5-kilometer jaunt to Battery Park City. Some came from as far as England, France and Australia. Since water temperature was a chilly 57 degrees, all wore wet suits. One swimmer had an asthma attack and had to be pulled from the water. Manhattan Island Foundation is sponsoring 10 more river and harbor races this summer, including around Governors Island, across the East River beneath the Brooklyn Bridge and along the Greenwich Village waterfront.
