Fighting crime and grime

Joe Tango, head of the Union Square Partnership business improvement district’s public safety division, center, with some of the BID’s public safety officers and sanitation workers. The public safety officers assist police in keeping down crime and quality-of-life offenses and are also frequently called upon to give out directions and information, while the sanitation workers supplement city sanitation services by sweeping up litter and emptying trash baskets. The BID recently ordered 130 new high-tech garbage cans to keep up with the increased amount of litter in the burgeoning entertainment, restaurant and shopping district.
