Charles St. gets new McNally restaurant

Keith McNally, the restaurateur who owns the popular restaurants Pastis in the Gansevoort Market district and Balthazar in Soho, intends to open a new Italian restaurant in the Village.

McNally plans to open Vieri on the ground floor of 15 Charles St. just east of Seventh Ave. in the Greenwich Village Historic District later this year.

The Community Board 2 Landmarks Committee on Feb. 27 unanimously approved proposed changes, including wood paneling and a large yellow sign, to the facade of the ground floor space. On March 7, the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission followed the committee recommendation and voted to grant a certificate of appropriateness for the changes.

Florent Morellet, who owns a restaurant on Gansevoort St. not far from Pastis, told the community board committee that McNally, a friend as well as a competitor, would be a welcome presence in the Village. Regis Duval, a 25-year resident of the building at 15 Charles St., said the facade would improve the look of the brick building, which dates from 1959. Nancy Blanford, who lives on Greenwich St. a block from Pastis, said McNally’s restaurant has always been a good neighbor.
