L.E.S. as film set
People who walked down Rivington Street recently might have thought they had stepped into a 1960s time warp. Buildings, and a bus, too, were decked out in psychedelic paint and one tenement was labeled as an official Black Panthers headquarters. It was all for a movie shoot, however, for the new film Across the Universe, scheduled for release next year. The flick is said to be a romance based on Beatles songs. Below, director Julie Taymor, on the set. Although, because of a deluge of film shoots and accompanying residents complaints, this part of the Lower East Side had been given a cooling-off period by the Mayors Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting, apparently, on-location shoots have started up again.
