Villager photos by Q. Sakamaki

Going the hard way

Last month, Q. Sakamaki, the East Village photographer, was in Gaza covering the eviction of the settlers by the Israeli Defense Forces. Clockwise from top, at the Gadid settlement, in Gush Qatif, I.D.F. soldiers forcefully evacuate a female settler, while another settler angrily shouts at them; a man is arrested by Israeli police during a protest at Newe Deqalim; (bottom two photos) at Newe Deqalim, a young girl and her sister try to hide under a dining room table, and after trying to persuade them to leave peacefully, I.D.F.’s drag them out; at Newe Deqalim, I.D.F.’s pull a man out his house, but his family and supporters pack themselves in at the terrace refusing to evacuate.
