Villager photos by Q. Sakamaki

Escape from New Orleans

East Village photographer Q. Sakamaki was in New Orleans earlier this month documenting the Katrina disaster. All these photos were taken four or five days after the hurricane hit. This page, clockwise from top: Waiting to be evacuated on a highway as a helicopter touches down by the Superdome; soldiers treat a man in critical condition outside the dome; sheriffs patrol downtown as looting and gunfire has erupted in many areas; evacuees wait on the edge of New Orleans to leave the city. Opposite page, clockwise from top: At the first evacuation point on the edge of New Orleans, a female soldier carries a child in critical condition to a medical tent; seniors at the city limits desperately await evacuation; a dead woman’s body near the Superdome; Chris Horrigan, 46, remains and guards his house.
