The plaza

The park’s central plaza area would be raised to grade level, making it accessible for the handicapped and the elderly. The concrete seating walls ringing the central plaza and eight trees would be replaced with classic-looking granite benches and seating walls that would be a more appropriate and usable, lower height. Vellonakis said only young people are strong enough to boost themselves onto the current walls, which, in general, are too high. The eight trees ringing the plaza are not growing well because their roots are strangled from being restricted in concrete casings, Vellonakis said. The plan is to replace these with eight fast-growing Chinese elms. Small display gardens would be added just to the east, west and south of the plaza
