The fence

Under the refurbishment plan for Washington Sq., a 4-ft.-high, wrought-iron fence would ring the park, with very slim metal slats. There would be no gate for the 100 ft. in front of the Arch, an area that would be closed at night with a rolling gate or moveable gates. There was a similar gate around the park up until the 1870s, but after 100 years it had deteriorated and was removed.
