To “clear the way” for New York University’s new “Zipper Building,” workers on Tuesday chainsawed down a cluster of Kwanzan cherry trees on Bleecker St. just west of Mercer St. that were beloved by the community. Some more of the trees, which flower pink petals in the spring, still stand on Mercer St., but will probably meet the same fate.
