A national “March for Bernie” on Saturday saw thousands of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’s backers take to the streets in 35 cities nationwide. In New York City, the Vermont senator’s supporters marched from Union Square down to Wall St.

Sanders lost by a razor-thin margin to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Monday’s Iowa Caucuses. Sanders said it showed his candidacy was for real, while Clinton said the tight race was good for democracy.

Meanwhile, in New York, the East Village’s Coalition for a District Alternative political organization endorsed Sanders. A week earlier, endorsing Clinton were a group of local L.G.B.T. politicians, including Assemblymember Deborah Glick, state Senator Brad Hoylman and City Councilmembers Rosie Mendez and Corey Johnson.

“I am elated to endorse Secretary Clinton for president,” Glick said. “Not only has she been a proven leader domestically on issues around women’s rights, L.G.B.T. rights and education, she has been a superlative diplomat with a wide range of international experience unlike any other candidate.”

Iowa surveys showed Sanders got greater support among younger voters, while Clinton was backed by more older voters. Generally speaking, more-liberal voters are backing Sanders, while Clinton supporters claim she has a better chance to win the general election.
