On July 4, a parade of ships saluted a replica of the historic French tall ship Hermione. The original French frigate brought General Lafayette to Boston in 1780 to tell George Washington the secret news that, thanks to Lafayette’s efforts, France would be sending reinforcements to aid the American revolutionary army, to the tune of 5,500 men and five frigates.
