100 years ago, in NYC, all of the buildings were at least 100 years old. Imagine what it would be like if they all remained. NYC is a cauldron of art and engineering innovation is a part of that artistic expression. It is also one of the most highly regulated places in the world as far as real estate development is concerned. If you think historic preservation has no voice in NYC you should probably move to a small town out west where progress has been hamstrung by the lack of economic development.
