Mary Zummo, 90, longtime Villager active in O.L. Pompei Senior Center

By ALBERT AMATEAU  |  Mary Zummo, a Village resident for more than 70 years and active as a volunteer at Our Lady of Pompei Senior Center, died Mon., Dec. 19, in Beth Israel Hospital at the age of 90.

She was in good health until September when she began a series of hospitalizations for heart and lung problems, said her son, Jerry Coccoli.

Known as Honey to her many friends in Greenwich Village, she was born in Jersey City to Carmine and Concetta Guanci, who had emigrated from Italy.

Along with her parents and three sisters, she moved to the Village as a child. When the family moved back to New Jersey, Mary remained in the Village and married Oreste Coccoli, her husband of 17 years, who died in 1960.

In 1961, she married Joseph Zummo. He died in 1992.

In addition to her son, two grandchildren also survive. Redden’s Funeral Home, 325 W. 14th St., was in charge of arrangements. The funeral was Wed., Dec. 28, at Our Lady of Pompei.
